Shona Stone is a blanket term used to describe a variety of native stones, dug and sculpted, mostly with hand tools, in Zimbabwe. Most of the stone used is from the family known as Serpentine. Varieties include Springstone, Opal Stone, Cobalt Stone, Leopard Rock, and Fruit Serpentine. Less common, harder varieties native to Zimbabwe include Verdite, Lepidolite, and White Marble. We are still learning and did not attempt to attribute the type of stones to individual sculptures. If the exact variety is important, you must verify it for yourself.
As we unpacked these treasures, many were wrapped in African newspapers dated back to 2005. Any price stickers in photos were on them before acquisition and represent wholesale pricing from 2005 and up. Sculptures were in storage for a couple of years before the current owner acquired them in 2016. They were then stored again until now.
Each sculpture is hand-carved and therefore unique. Natural Edges and naturally occurring grain patterns and formations in the stone may be intentionally incorporated in the creation of the piece. Minor surface scuffs or scratches, if present, may be observed in the photos and generally do not detract from the piece. A printed note is included with each sculpture outlining simple care for the stone sculptures. We may note major issues or flaws in the description if found. You are buying “As Is”. No bids will be retracted, and no returns will be accepted on condition issues if the condition is shown in photos, regardless of whether it was mentioned in the description.
