Item description:

Antique/vintage Belon porcelain barber’s bowl.  The porcelain mark suggests production in Belgium.  3.5″ high and 10.5″ in diameter less the opening.  Pictures will show two chips of size on the top edge and other finish issues, to be expected with age and use.  Per the Denver Art Museum:  [The bowl] was used for both shaving and bleeding (or bloodletting for medical purposes), as barbers were responsible for performing both of these tasks. The cutout for the sitter’s neck, or limbs, on one side of the basin hints at its purpose. Most surviving examples of barber’s bowls are made of silver or other precious metals.”
