Charming 1979 original acrylic painting by Ohio artist Josephine M. “Jo” Deis, featuring a wonderfully expressive wide-eyed owl perched among tree branches and stylized foliage. The warm brown, rust, and golden tones stand out beautifully against the soft green background, giving the work a distinctive 1970s folk-art and woodland feel with plenty of character.
Signed “Jo Deis ’79” at the lower left. The reverse retains its original Fredrix canvas label handwritten “Josephine M. Deis / Dayton Ohio 1979 / Acrylic Paint,” providing excellent identification and provenance for the work.
Research indicates Josephine M. Deis (1912–2013) was a longtime Dayton/Kettering-area resident who studied art at Rosewood and pursued painting locally. Limited information appears to have been published about her artistic career, making the signed and labeled nature of this piece particularly nice for collectors of regional Ohio artwork.
The canvas is marked 14” x 18” and is presented in a rustic wood frame that complements the natural woodland subject. Overall framed dimensions are approximately 21” x 17”.
