Designation: 2005-P Westward Journey Nickel Series – “American Bison” (Buffalo) Original Wrapped Roll
Mintage Year: 2005
Mint Location: Philadelphia Mint (“P” Mint Mark featured on wrapper)
Denomination: Five Cents ($0.05 USD / $2.00 Total Face Value per Roll)
Composition: 75% Copper – 25% Nickel
Grade/Condition: Brilliant Uncirculated (BU)
Design & Series Significance:
Historical Context: Released as part of the US Mint Westward Journey Nickel Series, this highly sought-after 2005 issue features the first newly styled American bison image appearing on a U.S. coin in 67 years.
Obverse: Features Joe Fitzgerald’s right-facing profile of Thomas Jefferson. It features an inscription of the word “Liberty” mimicking Jefferson’s personal handwriting.
Reverse: Designed by Jamie Franki, this dramatic image shows a rugged American Bison standing in profile, paying homage to the indigenous wildlife encountered during the historic Western expeditions.
Condition & Packaging Notes:
Wrapper Integrity: Housed in the authentic, original brown-banded United States Mint paper wrapper. The roll remains securely sealed with original tight, crimped factory machine ends.
Coin Condition: Both exposed end coins display the iconic bison reverse design. They showcase excellent eye appeal, a strong strike on the bison’s hide texture, and crisp E Pluribus Unum reverse lettering. Internal coins remain entirely untouched in pristine mint state.
