This historic 2-coin collector release was authorized by Congress to celebrate the grand centennial restoration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (1886–1986). Struck using specialized polished dies, both pieces display dramatic, frosty cameo details against deep, mirror-black fields:
1986-S Statue of Liberty Silver Dollar: Struck in 90% Fine Silver (Contains 0.7734 Troy Ounce actual silver weight). The obverse displays John Mercanti’s majestic, full-length profile of Lady Liberty greeting an Ellis Island sunrise. The reverse, designed by Matthew Peloso, features a brilliant, stylized close-up of the illuminated torch surrounded by Emma Lazarus’s timeless inscription from The New Colossus. 
1986-S Statue of Liberty Half Dollar: Struck in standard copper-nickel clad. The obverse showcases Edgar Z. Steever’s side profile of Liberty alongside a vintage steamship entering New York Harbor. The reverse, by Sherl J. Winter, displays a moving, detailed engraving of an immigrant family standing with their luggage on the threshold of America.
