Visual & Condition Analysis:
Obverse Profile: Displays the special dual-date “1776-1976” below the portrait of President Eisenhower. The fields show a uniform network of handling lines, bag marks, and light scuffs from commercial use. Flattening is present across the high focal points of the cheekbone and hair temple.
Reverse Features: Features Dennis R. Williams’ winning design combining the Liberty Bell overlaid on the moon. The details on the bell’s support structure show noticeable softening, and the crater texture on the lunar surface is worn but completely clear.
Variety Identification: This is the much scarcer Type 1 variety, easily distinguished by its thick, blocky, square-shaped letters in “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.” The later Type 2 variety modified these to much thinner, elegant serif text lines.
