Description
A highly desirable mid-century modern Scandinavian studio art pottery wall plaque designed by the acclaimed artist Marianne Starck for the historic Michael Andersen & Søn pottery studio on the Danish island of Bornholm.
Crafted from heavy, dark brown earthenware, this square plaque features rounded corners and showcases a striking stylized graphic of a stylized folk-art rooster or chanticleer. The central bird figure and its surrounding border panels are intricately hand-painted in a rich, vibrant cobalt blue glaze over a contrasting speckled, coarse light-beige sand slip ground.
The dark chocolate brown reverse side is crisply stamped in deep relief with the official studio hallmark—the iconic "Three Herrings" crest inside a shield (representing the coat of arms for Rønne, Bornholm). Below the logo, it bears the explicit incised country of origin origin mark "DENMARK" and the distinctive factory shape style number "164". The piece retains its original structural wire loop wrap, which is tightly laced through a pair of factory-drilled suspension holes along the top rim for immediate wall hanging.

Condition Report
True Ceramic Structure: The heavy earthenware plaque is in exceptional vintage condition, maintaining full structural integrity. It is completely free from structural hairline cracks, deep impact fractures, or evidence of professional restoration.
True Glaze & True Crazing Details: The cobalt blue and cream slip glazes remain bright, glossy, and highly reflective. Close inspection reveals an incredibly tight, uniform network of microscopic, age-appropriate underglaze crazing lines sealed entirely beneath the gloss layer, which is normal for 1960s Danish art pottery.
True Perimeter & Back Edge Assessment: A rigorous check of the crisp, square outer perimeter confirms that the exposed rim is smooth to the touch and completely free of chips, flea bites, or glaze scales. The reverse dark brown clay surface is very clean, showing minimal handling film, well-defined stamps, and a structurally sound hanging wire assembly.
