The 2003 Gradall XL4100 Wheel Excavator (Serial Number 0410586) represents the final peak era of Gradall’s classic “twin-engine” design before the industry shifted entirely to single-engine platforms. 
 
This highly specialized, highway-speed machine is built for heavy-duty ditching, sloping, and utility work, combining the mobility of a commercial truck with the unique 360-degree continuous tilt functions of a telescoping boom. 
 
Powertrain & Dual Engines
Unlike newer models that run both the chassis and hydraulics off one motor, this 2003 model relies on dual dedicated power plants: 
  • The Carrier Engine: A Cummins 5.9L 6-cylinder diesel engine handles over-the-road travel. It typically puts out around 200 horsepower to comfortably push the machine up to legal highway speeds.
  • The Upper Structure Engine: A second, independent Cummins 5.9L 6-cylinder diesel engine sits on the turntable. It outputs roughly 150 horsepower dedicated purely to driving the massive hydraulic pumps for digging, telescoping, and swinging. 
  • The Transmission: Power to the wheels is managed via an Eaton Fuller 8LL manual transmission. The “LL” stands for Double Low, giving you standard road gears plus two extreme low-ratio crawling gears (Lo and Lo-Lo). Performance & Boom Capabilities
The signature feature of the XL4100 is its robust, telescoping triangular boom assembly: 
  • 220° Continuous Tilt: The entire boom tilts 110° to the left and 110° to the right. This is ideal for precision grading, shaping V-ditches, or reaching under low-clearance utility lines and trees where a traditional boom would strike.
  • Digging Envelope: It features a maximum digging depth of roughly 20 feet and a flat bottom reach extending past 30 feet.
  • Remote Drive Capability: From inside the upper excavator cab, the operator can use hydraulic remote controls to creep the entire truck chassis forward or backward at low speeds (up to 5 mph). This eliminates the need to climb down into the lower truck cab just to reposition the machine along a lengthy ditch line.
