Approximately 20,000 of these carbines were produced from 1886 to 1889. The barrel retains 10% of its original blue with the rest being a dull gray, missing the front sight while at rear is the Buffington sight that can be adjusted for elevation and windage. Sight is complete and operates well. Left side of the barrel is stamped at breech with �V. P.� and eaglehead � Middle of the barrel at breech is also stamped with an �A”, Barrel is attached to carbine stock by a single barrel band that retains only hints of the bluing. Top of band is grooved to allow sight leaf to rest on it. Right side lock plate has a gray appearance with a spread-winged eagle forward of the hammer and �U. S.� over �SPRINGFIELD.� Stampings are strong. Action works properly. Breech is mostly gray on the exterior with some case colors on the inside. Top of breech at hinge is crisply stamped �U.S. MODEL 1884.�Wood stock shows only light wear from age, use and storage and presents nicely, LWP 1880 cartouche is visible on left side.
