Collectors Colt New Service .45 Colt with Colt factory original letter. The Colt New Service manufactured in 1917 with a 5.5-inch barrel and chambered in .45 Colt represents a highly collectible cross-section of American military and civilian firearms history. To clarify a common historical point of confusion: while the U.S. Military Model 1917 revolver used the exact same large “New Service” frame and 5.5-inch barrel length, the military contract versions were strictly chambered in .45 ACP (using half-moon clips to hold the rimless auto cartridges). A New Service made in 1917 chambered in the traditional rimmed .45 Colt (Long Colt) cartridge is a commercial model that was sold to both the civilian and law enforcement markets. This example was shipped out in November 7th,1917 to the Wright & Wilhelmy Company in Omaha Nebraska. It features a beautiful blued finish with Colt bakelite checkered grips, a 6 shot fluted cylinder, fixed sights, and a lanyard ring at the base of the grip. Includes the Colt letter, and a wood display box. Please see photos.
