A historic six-shot, .45 ACP double-action revolver in its original patina, originally produced to supplement the M1911 pistol during World War I. It is based on S&W’s large N-frame design. Chambered in .45 ACP, a rimless cartridge. To facilitate extraction, it utilizes half-moon or full-moon clips. A commercial rimmed cartridge, the .45 Auto Rim, was later developed to allow firing without the clips. Features a double-action/single-action mechanism with a swing-out 6 shot fluted cylinder, a blade front sight and a notched rear sight integral to the topstrap, and checkered diamond wood grips. The S&W version uniquely had a shoulder machined into the cylinder chambers, allowing it to headspace and fire .45 ACP rounds without clips (though extraction required manual poking out of cases). In contrast, the Colt version of the M1917 generally required clips for reliable firing and extraction in early models. includes a leather holster. Please see photos. C&R
