This Cadet and School training rifle. These rifles were specifically designed for school-based marksmanship training in France, a practice aimed at preparing young boys for future military service. They were used by school shooting clubs (bataillons scolaires) following the Franco-Prussian War to instill patriotic “revenge” and defense readiness. Often styled after contemporary French military firearms like the Model 1852 Mousqueton or the Lebel rifle to familiarize students with military-style handling. They were primarily chambered for the 6mm Flobert in both “Bosquette” conical and round-nosed “Nationale” cartridges. These are typically simple single-shot bolt-action rifles. It features a full length walnut straight stock with a rack number of “88” that has scratches, dings, and dents from age and use, a cleaning rod under the barrel, sling mounts, and adjustable sights.
