The serial number on this U.S. Trapdoor rifle indicates that it was produced in approximately 1884 with a stronger receiver and the distinctive “Buffington” rear sight with clear numbers designed for longer 1,400 yard ranges, a serrated trigger, and able to shoot the heavier .45-70-500 cartridge. These were the final improved models of the Trapdoor series and the standard infantry weapon of the U.S. Army at the time. This rifle in its original patina also features an inspector cartouche on the left side of the stock “SWP over 1885” , “US” stamped on the top of the buttplate,”US Model 1873″ stamped on top of the breach door, “U.S Springfield and Eagle” stamped on the right side lock plate, “00.E.39RE” stamped into the left side of the stock towards the rear, “J” over circle “P” on the underside of the stock by the bottom tang, “S” on the first barrel band, “V” over “P” over “Eagle” head over “P” on the top left of the barrel above the receiver, and an “A” stamped in the center of the barrel above the receiver. There are scratches, dents, dings and scuffs on the stock. The barrel is bright with some pitting, and the rifling is intact. Please see photos. No FFL in most states.
