Notes Wilf Perreault is a highly celebrated Canadian artist who, despite being universally famous for his luminous paintings of urban back alleys, began his formal career in abstract sculpture.While studying at the University of Saskatchewan under modernist masters Otto Rogers and William “Bill” Epp, Perreault focused entirely on large-scale, welded-steel abstract sculptures. However, when he moved to Regina in 1971 to teach high school art, he lacked a studio space large enough to accommodate welding heavy steel. This constraint famously forced him to pivot to acrylic painting.Even though he transitioned to two-dimensional art, he occasionally returns to sculpture, and his three-dimensional roots continue to influence his work
