Government of Newfoundland $1 Bill : Treasury Note of 1920 : Renouf/Brownrigg #A083946(Note: Hole Punch)(See Pictures for Varieties, Conditions, Serial Numbers, Printing Dates & Signatures)Information from Charlton Guide : “Treasury notes in $1 and $2 denominations dated 1920 were issued to deal with a shortage of silver coin (precipitated in part by the withdrawal of the cash notes) at a time when the price of silver was very high on world markets.Two tints, four face plates and four back plates were engraved for the $1 denomination; two tints, two face plates and two back plates for the $2 denomination. There were no check letters, the notes being numbered serially. All notes printed were in series A, which is shown by the letter A prefixing the number.The Admiral portrait of King George V on the left of the $1 note was the same as the one used on the centre of the 1911 $1,000 Canadian Dominion notes.Of the $1,200,000 worth of these notes printed, $1,181,704 had been destroyed by December 8, 1939. This amount includes both stocks of unissued notes and notes withdrawn from circulation.
