Manufactured in 1926 as per serial number this Winchester Model 1897 (M97) is an iconic American pump-action shotgun, designed by John Moses Browning and mass-produced from 1897 to 1957. Over one million were made, and it gained fame as the “trench gun” during World War I due to its effectiveness in close-quarters combat. The Model 1897 is notable for its robust design, external hammer, and “slam-fire” capability, which allows the user to fire continuously by holding down the trigger and rapidly working the action. It retains its military U S over flaming bomb stamp on the receiver and crossed cannons with W.B on left side os the stock. Looks to be in its Riot Gun configuration as used by prisons an police agencies at the time as opposed to the trench gun vented heat shield with bayonet lug. It is in its original patina and has some scratches, dents, and dings on the wood along with some finish wear. Please see photos. C&R
