The ArmaLite AR-7 Explorer is a famous takedown, semi-automatic .22 LR survival rifle originally designed by firearms legend Eugene Stoner in 1959. Its most defining feature is its modular design: the barrel, receiver, and magazines completely disassemble and store securely inside its own waterproof, floating buttstock. (1959–1973): ArmaLite initially designed the rifle as a civilian offshoot of the AR-5 bolt-action pilot survival rifle. They marketed the civilian version as the (1973–1990): After ArmaLite stopped production, Charter Arms bought the design rights. They produced rifles that were largely identical to the ArmaLite models. This example is an Armalite in an original Charter Arms Box.
